Holbein Artist's Pigment Paste is made with pure colour pigments so the concentration of colour is higher than general paints.
No binder (glue), fillers or other chemicals are added. Out of the bottle, Pigment Paste has a thick, lumpy consistency but by adding vehicles such gum arabic, acrylic emulsion, or animal glue, the Pigment Paste becomes water-based paints. Also, these pastes can be added to other water-based paints to control colour and thickness of the paints.
The colours in the pastes are intense, you can add a few drops to water for light hues and tints (never add white). Continue to add more drops to water for richer colours, and produce darker shades by adding small drops of black. Test constantly to ensure you are achieving the perfect colours. When not in use, keep the container tightly closed. Wash brushes with warm water and olive bar soap immediately after printing.
Powdery pigments have been used for traditional painting techniques such egg tempera and fresco painting; however, the Pigment Paste is easier to use with those techniques since it is already well kneaded. (It is easily mixed with mediums by palette knife because it is highly dispersive pastes.)
The Pigment Paste is also ideal for block printing.
Note - An adhesive agent needs to be added to Pigment Paste to be used as actual paint. Not all adhesives will work well with it - test a small amount first to ensure. Unlike powdered pigments, the Holbein Pigment Paste cannot be mixed with oil paints.
